My kids love Geography and for the life of me, I can’t put my finger on what got them into liking it! I was terrible at Geography and aside from constantly failing at the subject, the only thing about it that is vaguely memorable is the name of my Geography teacher – Mrs Little Stiff. I kid you not! She was Miss Little, then she got married and insisted on being called Mrs Little Stiff.
When my kids were little, I remember getting them some pencil sharpeners that were shaped like a globe. Just thinking about it now, perhaps that is what got them into liking aspects of Geography until they got to school and the teachers got them hooked. They showed more interest in checking out the countries and continents more than they ever did to using the globe as a sharpener.
Last month, I got a Discovery Nightlight Globe for our youngest. She is more comfortable to sleep with a light on. That has been a dilemma for some time because I did not want her to have an electrical lamp by her bed and I also did not want her to have to get out of bed to switch the light off when she was due to go to bed. For ages, we left the light on the landing on. This helps to reassure her. This was not suitable for me, however, as when I get out of bed at night to go to the bathroom, the bright light on the landing would make me ‘too awake’ and prevents me from drifting off to sleep when I returned to bed.
So now, she has the Discovery Night Globe by her bedside. She uses it a lot just before she drifts off to sleep, which is fine with me. Even when she falls asleep with it still on, it leaves a pleasant glow in the room that does not keep her awake nor disturb her sleep. It is perfect for me as well. From her open bedroom door, there is just enough light to see to move about freely.
This is what the Discovery Nightlight Globe looks like in the dark. Don’t you think this is cool?
I’ve asked the kids to tell me what the love about the Discovery Night Globe and these are some of their comments:
Ten years old: I like learning about what countries are in what continent. I also like to challenge myself to learn the names of as many countries as possible so that when we play ‘Country Names’ at school I get a high score. Maybe my favourite thing about the globe is that it lights up so I can see what is written on it even at night time without having to switch my room light on. I also like knowing where the countries are that we go on holiday.
Middle girl: I prefer the Discovery Night Globe to the one that I use for GCSE Geography. For one, mine doesn’t spin well and the Night Globe does. It’s like a toy but it is also very accurate, down to even showing how the earth rotates on its axis. Also, the light in my sister’s room looks so cool especially at night time. It’s a great educational functional tool that kids can learn from. I think it is just awesome.
My overall view is that this is really clever. To integrate a night light into a globe which ensures that kids can learn even in the last minute before they fall off to sleep is really great. We have had it for about a month now and are yet to come up with any negatives. It is 20cm in diameter and in terms of design it is just great.
If you are after something fun, useful and educational for your child for Christmas or birthday, this is it. It comes highly recommended by team Joleisa.
So our rating for the Discovery Night Globe is 5/5. Awesome!
