My Rib-Tickling Time At the Dentist + an Oral Irrigator Giveaway

Do you know how some people hate going to the dentist? Well, I’m not one of those! I try to go at least every six months, you know, like they recommend. If ever I do not get to go, it’s because I’ve been busy, not that I am scared of going to the dentist. And you know what, I have built a really good rapport with my dentist and whenever I go, he asks me about the frugal lifestyle I had told him about years earlier. He knows about it because I had asked him once if I could get more than one of those toothpaste samples that are available at the dentist. so I did tell him about other ways I am frugal and that is how our 6-monthly conversations started.

Anyway, when it was time for my last visit to the dentist in April, I had to be reminded because somehow I had forgotten. So I was in a taxi going to an appointment when I had a telephone call and it came up as ‘Dentist’. It clicked right away in my head that I had forgotten my appointment and that was the reason for the call. But you would think it would be the receptionist calling, right? Wrong! It was the dentist himself! When I said ‘hello’, the voice boomed back ‘Hello. This is your friendly dentist who has promised to take out your missing tooth and fill the gap|”

I could not stop laughing! I was not even able to respond to him right away! So after I had settled down some, I was able to say: ‘Well if I can get a dozen free toothpaste and a complimentary toothbrush then you can remove my missing tooth!’

At that point, he retorted: ‘Here, speak to the receptionist’. The next voice that came on, through my laughter was the pleasant June who assured me that the dentist was mad so I should excuse him, but that yes I had missed my appointment for earlier that day. I apologized and asked If I could please have an appointment if anyone cancelled later that day as I would be free for the rest of the day. June was her usual awesome self and I was able to get an appointment for 2:00 pm that same day. I still chuckle each time I remember.

So as I waited for my turn to sit in the dentist chair I thought about him planning to remove my missing tooth and I chuckled inwardly. Well when I went in and we greeted each other, I asked him about the plan he had for me. With a stern face, he retorted: ‘what plan?’ So I reminded him about what he had said to me earlier. He was stone-faced, and denied ever saying any such thing! I know him to be a joker but as so many people were waiting in reception to be seen, I let him carry on with my cleaning and didn’t bother him too much!

Cleaning done, I went back out to pay June and to book my next appointment. So as I was about to leave, I said thanks to her for fitting me in at such short notice. She was not sure what I was talking about and told me that my appointment was booked from 6 months before. I had to do a double take. What was all this joking on the phone from the dentist and then her coming on the line to sort out the last minute appointment for me? Was I getting crazy? Was I imagining things? She knew not what I was going on about and the area was getting full of waiting patients so I said my goodbye.

This was certainly a bizarre encounter! I was baffling my brain! At about 5:15 pm that same day, I had a phone call from ‘dentist’. I knew the voice! It was him! He said ‘Got ya!’ And then I got it. It was April 1, and I was pranked! I was truly fooled. I’ve got a plan! Roll on April 1st next year!

  1. I love the fact that my mouth is extra clean when I come out of the dentist. I feel saintly.

  2. I have just had to have 2 molars extracted which took nearly an hour.I wish I had looked after my teeth better when I was younger.

  3. I hate going to the dentist as I have had a few fillings and hate the injections to numb my mouth beforehand! I have to admit, I do often cancel my 6 monthly checkups just because I hate going so much!

  4. im terrified of the dentist ive not been for ten years and a fillig fell out two weeks ago im in agony but need the movtivation to go get it sorted!

  5. The only thing I hate about going to the dentist is the big bill at the end. It makes a total mockery of our “free at the point of use” NHS.

  6. I went to the dentist last week as an emergency appointment and I was absolutely petrified and I had to wait an hour to be seen. However, when I went in I was met by two very nice ladies and despite me being so petrified I was shaking they managed to bring a little humour to my appointment and were very caring and did a great job for me.

  7. I don’t mind going to the dentist but yet again I’m on the look out for a new one as my last two have become obsessed with cosmetic dentistry (whitening, veneers, etc) and pushing all sorts of add ons rather than just getting on with the basics!

  8. I don’t mind going to the dentist. I go every six months. However, my horror story is having to get a molar removed to make space for a wisdom tooth which was growing sideways. Why are they called “wisdom teeth” anyway? They cause nothing but heart or rather toothache. 🤔

  9. I dread going to the dentist and hate having fillings, I would rather have a tooth pulled out than drilled any day.

  10. I love going to the dentist i find it so relaxing and enjoy each time i go even when i get fillings or teeth removed.

  11. always go every 6 months, have had lots of treatments over the years, very happy with current dentist. Dentistry has come a very long way from when I started going as a child.

  12. I’ve had a mixed bag with my dental trips. I’ve been in excruciating pain after having treatment but my dentist is lovely and helps with my fears. I hated having a night guard fitted, I nearly swallowed the mould putty!

  13. My last trip to the denist I had a clean and polish and it made me feel squeaky clean xx

  14. I hate how guilty they try to make you feel, i’m like I’m HERE doing something about it!

  15. I find going to the dentists the most stressful experience – I have a really bad gag reflex so the whole process takes a long time!

  16. Wow, not sure I’d be too happy if my dentist tried to play an April Fool’s joke on me… I really don’t mind going to the dentist and don’t really understand the fear. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t enjoy going, but I’d rather go and have my teeth looked after and keep them than not! Yeah, injections hurt a bit, but in the long run it’s worth it.

    1. Yeah, for most people there is a love hate relationship going on with their dentist but really it is for our good, so I say still go. Good luck.

  17. My current dentist is fantastic, after being out off going by dentists in my childhood

  18. I recently changed to a new dentist and I love her! I’ve always been scared of the dentist but she’s great, encourages me to stick my headphones on and listen to music, it’s a bit more relaxing now and I never miss an appointment.

  19. I’m never happy at having to visit the dentist as I always feel so bad about the condition of my teeth.

  20. I don’t really like going, I’m autistic and the noises and smells really upset me. But I know I need to get my teeth checked so I try my best!

  21. i’m always apprehensive about the dentist, not so much about the discomfort but the news that something else needs to be done. It’s good to go regularly though and it feels lovely after the hygienist has got to work. Lovely product – never seen it before.

  22. I do not have any issues with the dentist and make sure I always attend. My husband on the other hand once had a tooth extraction, the Anesthetic did not work at first, he found this out when he felt the tooth being crushed, so they tried again, when they tested it he didnt feel anything, so they went straight in there and did it, he felt it all but it was to late as they were half way through, to finish it off, he decided to swill his mouth out when he got back home, so the clot came out he was in agony, he hasnt been back to the dentist since!

  23. I have had a lot of work done on my teeth. I seem to go 6 months but then once ive had a check up and need some work done, I then have problems for a couple of months or more. Ive just had my 2nd root canal in this year. two little fillings left to do, then hopefully ok for another 6 months

  24. Very bad experience of school dentists and NHS ones over the years but at the age of 60 finally managed to find a non NHS practice which is not much more expensive than NHS where the dentist is lovely. I still grip the chair (old habits die hard) but in 10 years have never experienced any pain. Annual check up and 3 visits to the hygienist a year now.

  25. petrified of the dentist ,had a tooth out when I was 13 and it snapped 37 years later still scared

  26. I don’t mind my dentist. It’s in a really run down building and he is quite scary looking. But he is as gentle as possible and I trust that he doesn’t advice procedures just to make money

  27. I don’t have a dentist at the moment as the area I moved to has a shortage and I haven’t been able to find an NHS dentist yet.

  28. I hadn’t been to the dentist for several years as I did not have the money to spare and I couldn’t find a pay as you go dentist in my area at the time. Since then I have moved and suddenly remembered that you can self refer to a dentistry teaching hospital and get your teeth sorted for free by the students as they need real clients to practice on. I was accepted at Guy’s London and have enjoyed several free visits and have had work done by students.

  29. I hate going to the dentist I am sure lots of other people do as well I really had a miserable few weeks about a month ago when my crown broke and could not be fixed and I had to have the root out. But speak as you find the dentist was great no problems and no pain.

  30. I used to be terrified of the dentist. In fact as soon as I turned 18 I stopped going, in fact I didnt go for another 18 years!!!!! i finally had to go back 2 years ago as I was in agony with my wisdom tooth – I couldnt eat for 3 weeks. Finally saw an emergency dentist and it was actually fine. They removed my wisdom tooth there and then and the relief was instant. After that I got myself a dentist and I go every 6 months – I dont mind them anymore and my mouth and teeth are healthy

  31. In my early teens I needed braces for about 4 years with almost monthly visits to the dentist, so I don’t mind having a check up every six months

  32. I don’t like going to the dentist, I hate the feeling and worried something may be wrong

  33. I Have only had one bad experience this was when i was having a tooth pulled. I had to get the nurse to put another parking ticket in my car is it took 2 hours to get it out.

  34. I don’t have any horror stories but still don’t like going. It’s a relief when it is all over.

  35. I’ve had good and bad experiences so I have mixed feelings about going to the dentist now.

  36. A experience I had was that my dentist first started on the 3rd floor and then I kept moving down the rooms and now I’m on the 1st floor and I keep getting lots of different dentist’s one saying my teeth really good and another say you know your teeth not doing very well I don’t understand.

  37. I detest going to the dentist so I will try anything to ensure that I stay out of that chair .I had to have a root canal filling done once and it went ok but … right behind the filled tooth the roof of my mouth swelled up into an abscess in the middle of the night and by the time they opened the next morning it was enormous so he had to burst it. Not a nice experience, lots of pain, pus and blood, I’ll never forget it urgh!

  38. I recently had to have an enormous shell of a back tooth removed that was particularly awkward and my dentist had to refer me to a specialist. I was quite frightened but he showed me the tooth before I even knew he had started. An absolute genius.

  39. I have a fear of dentists and my anxiety goes through the roof as soon as I sit on the dentists chair, luckily my teeth are all good so only need to go every six months
